MISSOULA, Mont. -- The University of Montana scored 18-straight points to end the game Saturday at Washington-Grizzlies Stadium, defeating the Wildcats 18-10 and dropping WSU to 0-4 on the season and 0-2 in Big Sky play.
Montana (4-0 overall, 1-0 Big Sky), persevered in a penalty-marred game that saw the two teams each rack up 120 yards of penalties. The Grizz were hit with 11 yellow flags, while the Wildcats committed 13 fouls.
The Wildcats struck first on a trick-play as running back Adrian Conway threw to tight end B.A. Harrell for a touchdown at the 6:38 mark of the first quarter.
WSU tacked on three more points early in the second as Conor Foley connected on a 30-yard field goal to put the 'Cats ahead 10-0.
Montana countered with three-straight field goals by Dan Carpenter, the first coming with 7:14 left in the second period on a 47-yard try. Carpenter later hit on attempts of 40 and 20-yards in the third quarter to cut the Wildcat lead to 10-9.
The turning point of the game came on the possession following Carpenter's 20-yarder. On second-and-ten from the Wildcat's own 34-yard line, quarterback Cameron Higgins was intercepted by Montana's Kyle Ryan, who returned the ball to the 20, setting the Grizzlies up in prime field position.
The Grizz capitalized six plays later, as Greg Coleman scored on a one-yard burst, to put UM ahead to stay. Carpenter tacked on his fourth field goal of the day in the fourth quarter to finish the scoring.
Higgins was solid for the Wildcats despite the one interception. The red-shirt freshman completed 13 of 27 passes for 133 yards. Higgins hooked-up with Akamu Aki five times on the day for 58 yards. Trevyn Smith posted 59 yards running on 17 carries to lead the ground attack for WSU.
J.D. Folsom and Bryce Scanlon led the Wildcat defense, combining for 17 tackles, three tackles for loss, and one sack. Steve Stutsman added an interception for the 'Cats.
WSU will continue Big Sky play as they return home to face Sacramento State on Saturday, Oct. 6. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
