Ogden, UT ? Behind the fourth best hitting percentage in school history the Weber State volleyball team defeated Northern Arizona 3-0 Saturday night at the Swenson Gym to improve to 3-3 in Big Sky action. The ?Cats won the match 25-20, 25-17, 25-17 to improve to 12-8 overall.
The Wildcats posted a hitting percentage of .418 as a team, which now ranks as the fourth best percentage in a match in school history. Weber State had 98 total attacks and finished with 48 kills and only seven hitting errors, the fewest of the season.
In addition, WSU junior Jenna Leggat hit .846 on the night, which ranks as the second best percentage in school history. Leggat had 13 hitting attempts and finished with 11 kills and no hitting errors. Just twice did she have an attempt that didn't end in a kill.
“This was a great weekend for us,” Leggat said. “We really played well as a team and gained a lot of confidence for us as we head out on the road. We can take what we did well this weekend and keep improving.”
NAU scored the very first point of the match, when Weber State scored three straight and the ?Cats never trailed the rest of the match.
WSU out killed NAU 48-35, out hit the Lumberjacks .418 to .138, out dug them 52-37, and out blocked them 9-2.
“This was a complete team effort,” said WSU head coach Al Givens. “We passed the ball very well and played great defense and we were able to control the tempo, which is what we focused on coming in. Everyone was really focused tonight.”
Weber State was led by junior Chelsea Bair who finished with her 11th double-double posting a match-high 14 kills and 14 digs. Bair also hit a season-high .481 for the match with just one hitting error.
Leah Burmeister and Brittney Bisaillon both posted nine kills each and Caitlyn Anderson added 16 digs.
After playing seven of the last nine matches at home, the Wildcats now hit the road for five-straight Big Sky matches starting next weekend at Montana State and Montana.
“We were able to defend our homecourt which we needed to do,” Givens said. “Now we have to play with the same intensity and take it on the road. There is still a lot of things we need to work on and need to keep improving.”
