LAS VEGAS -- The Weber State University spirit squad recently placed second at the USA Collegiate Cheer and Dance Nationals. The finish is the best-ever for the 'Cats, who have come away with third-place the previous three years.
"We're really excited about our second-place finish," said WSU spirit squad advisor Summer Willis. "We came in just behind a very-strong Kentucky squad and were able to beat some other very competitive teams."
The squad competed in the four-year college co-ed large division, and were awarded second-place behind the University of Kentucky. Third-place went to Long Beach State and fourth to the University of Oregon. This is the fourth year the squad has competed in a national competition and is its highest finish ever.
The dance team also competed at the national event and placed fifth out of 14 teams in the small open dance category. This is the first year the dancers have competed in the dance category.
In the partner stunt division, Tori Allman and Mace Warren were awarded first place. Alexi Coy and Cameron Harp also qualified for the finals of the division and finished third.
In April the squad will be attending the NCA/NDA Collegiate Cheer and Dance Championships in Daytona Beach, Fla. It will mark the first time the Wildcats have attended a national competition on the East Coast.
"The team is really looking forward to the competition in Florida," said Willis. "They are excited to go out there and make a name for the community of Ogden and Weber State University."
