'Cats Fall at Sacramento State 5-2

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- The Weber State men's tennis team suffered its first loss of the Big Sky season on Saturday as Sacramento State claimed a 5-2 win over the Wildcats.
Henning Hipp and Nick Plum pulled out an 8-4 win over Holden Ching and Ronan Conlon at No. 2 doubles, but the Hornets claimed the point behind wins at the No. 1 and 3 positions. The Wildcats narrowly missed as Spencer Marchant and Ryan Garner were upset in extra games 9-7 in the No. 3 position.
In singles, the Wildcats again had their chances to upset the conference-leading Hornets. Nick Plum defeated Ching 7-6, 6-4 in the No. 4 position and Marchant downed Ronan Conlon 6-1, 6-1 at No. 6. After the Wildcats suffered losses in the top two spots, they needed wins at both 3 and 5 to steal the win.
At No. 5, Chris Williams took the early lead with a 6-3 first set win, but fell 6-1 in the second and 6-0 in the third to lose the point to Sven-David Rueff. The 'Cats also lost at No. 3 as Artur Kimenka also came from behind, defeating Fabio Mancarella 4-6, 6-3, 6-4.
Weber State falls to 8-8 overall on the season and to 2-1 in Big Sky play. The Wildcats will return home for a five-match homestand, beginning with a Big Sky match against Montana State on Friday, April 4 at 2:00 p.m.
