Wildcats defeat Idaho State for First Big Sky Win

OGDEN, Utah -- The Weber State women's tennis team (6-12 overall; 1-3 Big Sky) earned its first conference win of the 2008 season, defeating Idaho State 4-3 on Saturday at the Ogden Athletic Club.

"This was a really good win for us," said WSU head coach Jonas Ehrlin. "We were fortunate to come out ahead today after dropping the doubles point. That seemed to be an eye-opener for our girls and they showed a lot of determination to come back in singles. That's the first time this year we've been able to rally for a win after dropping the doubles point."

The Bengals (2-7; 0-4) took the doubles point, winning at the No. 2 and 3 spots. Inalise Pienaar and Ashley Schapper won at the No. 1 spot with an 8-1 win over Stephanie Roldan and Ali Rivera.

In singles play, the Wildcats won at the top four spots to take a 4-1 lead and secure the necessary points for the match win. Gabriela Venditto defeated Lisel Lewis 7-6, 6-4 at the No. 1 position. At No. 2, Pienaar downed Stephanie Roldan 6-4, 6-4, while Schapper won at No. 3 with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Sophie Dang. At No. 4, Greyce Farias pulled out a three-set victory over Lauren Pascoe, winning the clinching point 4-6, 6-4, 6-3.

"Getting a conference win under our belts was really big," said Ehrlin. "Now we need to carry some momentum throughout this home stretch. We've got some crucial league matches coming up and this was a good start for us."

The Wildcats will take on Utah State on Tuesday, April 8 at 2:00 p.m. in Ogden, before resuming the Big Sky schedule next weekend against Northern Colorado.
