OGDEN, Utah -- The Weber State women's basketball team used 53 percent shooting and a solid defensive effort to cruise to a 66-46 win over Utah Valley on Saturday afternoon at the Dee Events Center.
"I definitely think that the effort defensively, and the intensity defensively, has been solid at home and on the road," said WSU head coach Carla Taylor. "We've played good teams. The Reno game, the Boise State game, even the Utah game, we played good defense. Our girls have bought in on the defensive end, and good things have happened. The tough games that we've played on the road are getting us prepared for conference."
The Wildcats hit 25 of 47 shots from the floor, including four of eight from behind the arc, and held the Wolverines to 34.5 percent from the field. Weber State also forced 26 turnovers, leading to a 29-18 points off turnovers margin.
Utah Valley held a 10-8 lead at the 14:46 mark of the first half, but the Wildcats used a 19-4 run over the next eight and a half minutes to go ahead by 13. The 'Cats pushed the lead to 17 points at the half, and led by as many as 21 in the second half. The Wolverines would get no closer than 12 points over the final 20 minutes.
Tonya Schnibbe and Sarah Conner each scored 15 points to lead the Wildcats. Schnibbe added four rebounds and seven assists, while Conner added four rebounds, four assists and four steals. Caitlin Anderson gave Weber State three players in double figures with 12 points, and also pulled down a team-high five rebounds.
Julie Smith led the Wolverines with 13 points, but hit just 6 of 22 shots from the floor. Asumi Nakayama added 10 points for Utah Valley.
Weber State will return to action on Wednesday, Dec. 9 as they host Brigham Young at 5:00 p.m. in the opener of a men's and women's basketball doubleheader. The Wildcat men will host Southern Utah, with tip-off scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
