Wildcats Drop Tough 6-1 Loss to EWU

OGDEN, Utah -- The Weber State women's tennis team (2-9 overall; 0-2 Big Sky) fell to Eastern Washington (5-5; 2-2) by a 6-1 margin on Friday afternoon at the Ogden Athletic Club.
The outcome was a lot closer than the margin of victory indicated as three singles matches went to the Eagles in three sets. The Wildcats could have swung the match in their favor if the trio of three-setters went to WSU instead.
"This was a tough one to lose, because we definitely had our chances," said WSU head coach Jonas Ehrlin. "But overall this was a good match for us. We have to take it as a great learning experience, especially with our freshmen."
In doubles play the two teams split the No. 2 and 3 matches. That sent the point to the No. 1 court with Eastern Washington prevailing with a 8-6 victory. Elsje Beneke and Karlie Hancock earned the lone win for WSU in the doubles competition as they defeated Judy Liening and Heather Handwerk 8-5.
In singles play, Hancock won again, defeating Liening 6-4, 7-6 for the team's lone point of the day. Greyce Farias (No.1), Caroline Drugge (No. 2) and Brittiny Moore (No. 4) each suffered tough three-set losses.
The Wildcats will head out this weekend to play a pair of matches in Flagstaff, Ariz. The team will face Northern Arizona in a conference match on Sunday, Mar. 8 before taking on East Tennessee State on Monday, Mar. 9. Both matches are scheduled for 10:00 a.m.
