Second Half Rally Sends Weber State Past Montana, 64-56, Saturday Night in Ogden

Damian Lillard scored a career high 30 points, 11 of them coming in the final four minutes, leading Weber State to a 64-54 win over the University of Montana, Saturday night in Ogden
The Wildcats led 33-23 at half time behind 16 points from Lillard and appeared to have control of the game. The Grizzlies came out in the second half and out scored the Wildcats 8-1 in the first three minutes. WSU stopped the run on a basket from Steve Panos, a three-pointer and free throw by Nick Hansen, making it 40-34 for the 'Cats.
Anthony Johnson's lay up at the 12:32 mark ignited a 16-2 scoring run for the Grizzlies, giving them a 50-42 lead with 8:50 remaining. Following a media time out at 7:27, the Wildcats put the pedal to the metal reeling off 11 unanswered points to take the lead at 53-50 with 4:08. Damian Lillard and Steve Panos each scored four points in that run and Nick Hansen added a three-pointer.
The Grizzlies tied the game at 54-54 on two free throws from Brian Qvale with 2:53 remaining. Lillard then took over scoring six straight points. Steve Panos added a bucket to make it an 8-0 scoring run for the Wildcats and a 62-54 lead with 18 seconds left. Lillard's two free throws with one second left gave him his 30 point game. It was the first 30+ point game by a Wildcat since the 2006-07 season when Dezmon Harris scored 30 at Sacramento State.
Weber State made just 20-52 (.385) shots from the field, 7-21 in the second half, but made 17-31 free throws including 14-24 in the second half to off set the field goal percentage.
Freshman guard, Will Cherry, came off the bench to lead the Grizzlies with 17 points. Brian Qvale had 14 points and three blocked shots and Anthony Johnson added 11. Jack McGillis had a game high 11 rebounds.
Montana is now 10-6 overall and 1-3 in Big Sky Conference play.
Lillard's 30 led all scorers. He was 8-15 from the field, 4-7 from three-point range, and was 10-13 from the line. He had nine rebounds, five assists and two blocked shots in 34 minutes. Steve Panos was the only other Wildcat in double figure scoring with 10. Franklin Session led the 'Cats with nine rebounds. Weber State is now 9-6 overall and atop the Big Sky Conference standings with a 3-0 record.
That 3-0 mark will be put to the test next week. WSU plays at red-hot Northern Colorado next Thursday, January 7 at 7:05 p.m.. (MST) in Greeley, Colorado. The Bears have the best overall record in the Big Sky Conference this season at 13-3 and are 2-1 in Big Sky Conference play. The 'Cats then play at Northern Arizona on Saturday, January 9 beginning at 6:35 p.m. (MST).
