Women's Basketball Shatters Attendance Record
OGDEN, Utah -- Even in defeat, the Wildcats are showing what they're made of.
Sophomore guard Megan Patterson splashed in a team-high 15 points and team captains Caela Mohre and Caitlin Anderson added 14 and 13 points, respectively, as the Weber State University women's basketball team went toe-to-toe against Oregon State, out of the Pacific-10 Conference, on Tuesday afternoon.
Fueled by a school-record crowd of 4,877, the Wildcats battled the Beavers to the final whistle, ultimately coming up just short in a 62-55 nail-biter at the Dee Events Center.
Tuesday's game was Weber State's fourth annual Field Trip Day promotion, with thousands of northern Utah area elementary, middle school and junior high school kids in attendance.
"Those almost 5,000 students who came to the game today created incredible energy in the (Dee Events Center) for our team," Weber State coach Carla Taylor said. "They were incredible. It was nice that our Weber State women's basketball program could give back to the community and provide a fun, educational field trip to the local elementary and middle schools."
It's the fourth consecutive year the game as set a new attendance record for Weber State women's basketball, with Tuesday's total eclipsing last season's 4,540 that saw the Wildcats top Southern Utah.
Anderson finished with her first double-double of the season and 13th of her career, pulling down a season-high 10 rebounds in addition to her 13 points. She also had three assists.
Mohre's 14 points on 5-of-11 shooting from the field were a career high for the Blakeslee, Ohio-native and she also had four assists.
Patterson tied her career high of four 3-point field goals for the fourth time in five games and finished in double-figures scoring for the fourth time in that span. Patterson also had a season high-tying four rebounds.
Weber State started the game on fire, hitting three consecutive 3-pointers to take an early 9-2 lead. The Wildcats only trailed once in the first half at 20-19, but quickly regained the lead and held a 29-25 advantage at halftime.
WSU led by as many as eight early in the second half and still held a 43-38 advantage with 12:43 remaining, but the Wildcats went ice cold, not scoring again until Mohre's jumper with 5:39 remaining as Oregon State (6-3) scored 17 consecutive points.
The Wildcats battled back to cut the deficit to just five on Patterson's 3-pointer with 2:58 left to play and had several opportunities to cut even further into the lead, but couldn't quite come all the way back.
Weber State (3-5) remains at home this week and will take on former Big Sky Conference rival Boise State on Saturday at 5 p.m. in the Dee Events Center in the opening game of a double-header with the Weber State men's basketball team.
