OGDEN, Utah -- The 2010 portion of the schedule ended in heart-break for the Weber State University women's basketball team. Despite holding a 15-point, second-half lead, the Wildcats shooting touch faltered when they needed it most as Weber State came up just short, falling 74-72 to the University of Nevada-Reno on Thursday night at the Dee Events Center. Senior forward Caitlin Anderson, facing a Wolf Pack squad from her hometown, scored a season high-tying 26 points, including 17 in the first half. Anderson knocked down 7-of-11 shots from
the field and 4-of-5 3-point field goals in moving into the Top 15 on Weber State's all-time scoring list. Anderson now has 1,028 career points, moving her past Associate Head Coach Rachelle Gardner-Sayers (1,009) on the career chart. She also added eight rebounds, three assists and a pair of steals.
Freshman point guard Justine Johnson, making her third start of the season in place of injured junior Caela Mohre, had a career-high 12 points and tied her career-high with six assists.
Sophomore forward Mariah Metoyer added nine points and seven rebounds for Weber State.
With the game tied at 72-72, Nevada's Shavon Moore scored underneath the basket with nine seconds left after the Wolf Pack nearly turned the ball over just seconds before. The Wildcats called a time out at midcourt, but Johnson's short-range driving shot came up short as the buzzer sounded.
Weber State led 55-40 with 16:15 remaining in the game, but went ice cold and was outscored 24-7 over the next 10 minutes as Nevada took its first lead since the opening seconds on a layup with 5:50 left to play.
With Nevada locking down Anderson, Johnson scored six points in the final 2:48, twice tying the game, including pulling the Wildcats even with 32 seconds to play.
The Wildcats (4-7) led 45-33 at halftime, hitting six first-half 3-pointers and 9-of-9 free throws. The charity stripe, however, is where Weber State was ultimately undone in the second half as WSU missed four consecutive attempts, including three straight on the front-end of a 1-and-1 opportunity.
Nevada (10-2) captured its third consecutive win in the 15-game series with Weber State and now trails 9-6.
Weber State will return to action on Monday night in Bakersfield, Calif., where the Wildcats will take on the Roadrunners of Cal State Bakersfield at 8 p.m. in the Icardo Center.
