Wildcats Drop Home Opener to 'Zags

OGDEN, Utah -- The Weber State women's tennis team opened up its 2010 home schedule on Sunday with a 6-1 loss to Gonzaga at the Ogden Athletic Club.
"This was a tough match," said WSU head coach Jonas Ehrlin. "We fought our hearts out against a very strong Gonzaga team. I was very pleased with our singles play today. We lost a bunch of really close first sets and couldn't quite catch up after that, but the players fought hard."
The Wildcats got a win at No. 2 doubles as Elsje Beneke and Greyce Farias knocked off Clara Dodge and Kristina Zauere 8-7, but the 'Zags earned the point with an 8-4 win at No. 1 and an 8-1 win at No. 3.
In singles, Beneke gave the Wildcats their lone point of the day with a three-set win at No. 3. Beneke bookended a 3-6 loss in the second set with 6-4 wins in the first and third set for her first singles win of the season.
"Elsje played possibly the best singles match of her career today," said Ehrlin. "She was really on today, picking up wins for us in singles and doubles."
The Wildcats lost three first sets in singles by scores of 7-5 or closer, costing them some much needed momentum. Keya Jenkins and Brittiny Moore both lost 7-5 in the opening set, while Greyce Farias dropped her first set 7-6 in a tiebreaker. All three lost in straight sets. Moore nearly pulled out a third set, but again lost a close one, falling 7-5 as well in the second set.
Caroline Drugge also lost a close first set, as Dodge beat her 6-4 in the opener. She managed to get to a third set with a strong 6-3 win in the second set, only to fall 6-3 in the deciding set.
Weber State fell to 0-4 on the season as they continued a string of tough non-conference opponents. Gonzaga, meanwhile improved to 4-1.
