Wildcats Hang On For A 75-71 Big Sky Conference Win At Montana State

For the second time this season, the Wildcats were saved by some untimely free throw misses by an opponent. Montana State's MARQUIS NAVARRE missed two free throws, which would have tied the game, with four seconds left, allowing the Wildcats to escape Worthington Arena with a 75-71 victory. DAMIAN LILLARD's two free throws with three seconds left iced the game.
Back on January 16, the Wildcats looked doomed at Idaho State. With seven-tenths of a second on the clock in the second overtime, and down by one, ISU's Broderick Gilchrest had two shots to win the game. He made the first one but missed the second and WSU went on to win 96-93 in three overtimes.
Saturday's game was more like a 15-round heavyweight boxing match and both teams fought, clawed and scratched the entire evening. MSU's only lead came less than two minutes into the game, 3-2, on a three-point play by BOBBY HOWARD.
The Wildcats built an 11-point first half lead, 33-22 with 4:50 left on a jumper by LILLARD, but the Bobcats used an 8-0 scoring run to make it a three-point game, 33-30, when HOWARD made one of two free throws. WSU closed out the half on an 8-3 scoring run, taking a 41-33 lead into the locker room.
Weber State took a 53-43 lead with 15:02 left on a slam dunk by FRANKLIN SESSSION. From that point to the finish, the Bobcats closed to within three, two and eventually, one, but could never get over the hump.
ERIK RUSH hit a three-pointer with 3:41 remaining, making it 68-67 for the Wildcats. STEVE PANOS scored two straight baskets pushing the lead back out to five with 1:13 left.
MARQUIS NAVARRE's lay up at 1:02 pulled the Bobcats to within three at 72-69. Neither team could muster a point until NAVARRE made good on a driving lay up with 13 seconds left.
Following that bucket, WILL BYNUM fouled KYLE BULLINGER on the inbounds play. BULLINGER missed the first shot but made the second. BULLINGER then fouled NAVARRE with four seconds left setting up the potential game tying free throws.
“That was a good basketball game,” said WSU head coach Randy Rahe. “Both teams fought hard the entire 40 minutes and everything was earned out there. I was really proud of how we hung in there together and didn't hang our head after the game on Friday night.”
LILLARD and HOWARD each scored 25 points. Each of them scored 13 in the first half and 12 in the second. LILLARD was 7-16 from the field. Howard was 8-15. MARQUIS NAVARRE scored 16 points and ERIK RUSH added 13 for the Bobcats who fall to 12-11 overall and 7-5 in Big Sky Conference play.
FRANKLIN SESSION scored 14, hitting 6-9 from the field. TREVOR MORRIS had a big game off the bench, scoring 11 points. KYLE BULLINGER had 10. The Wildcats are now 15-8 overall and on top of the Big Sky standings with a 9-2 record.
