Wildcats Lock Second in Big Sky

OGDEN, Utah -- Weber State secured second place in the Big Sky Conference on Tuesday with a 6-1 win over Idaho State at the Ogden Athletic Club.
The Wildcats swept the doubles matches with relative ease, and carried the strong play over to singles, where they won five of the six matches.
Sascha Kiehne and Simon Unger defeated Javier Royo and Danel Barrenechea 8-3 at No. 1, while Henning Hipp and Dave Hintze dominated Colton and Dakota Pate 8-2 at No. 2. The Bengals team of Nate Gross and Dan Buckingham fought at No. 3, but Spencer Marchant and Cole Paterson held off the Bengal duo for an 8-6 win.
Kiehne got the ball rolling for the Wildcats in singles, defeating Dakota Pate 6-1, 6-2 at No. 3 to put WSU ahead 3-0 after Barrenechea retired against Hipp at No. 2.
The Bengals produced strong performances in the bottom three singles matches, but were able to win only one of the three. Marchant came from one set down for a 4-6, 6-4, 10-6 win at No. 4. Hintze also won in three sets, defeating Colton Pate 6-7, 6-1, 6-3 at No. 6.
