A ball control offense and a nearly unyielding defense by Sacramento State, spelled nothing but trouble and frustration for Weber State as the Hornets snapped a two-game losing streak to the Wildcats with a 24-17 win Saturday in Sacramento.
The Hornets held the ball for 35 minutes, including 10:09 in the fourth quarter, scoring 10 of the game-winning 24 points. Brian Hilliard, who missed the 2009 season with an injury, carried 32 times for 136 yards and scored one touchdown and New Mexico State transfer, Jeff Fleming, completed 13-22 passes for 164 yards and two touchdowns to lead the way.
“They controlled the line of scrimmage on offense and we weren't physically or mentally ready to answer them.” said WSU head coach Ron McBride.
Fleming threw both of his touchdown passes in the second quarter finding Morris Norrise on a 16-yd toss and Brett Willis on a 10-yd strike to take a 14-0 lead. WSU scored its three points on a 32-yd field goal by Shaun McClain as the first half clock expired.
The Wildcat scored the only third quarter points on a 11-yard pass from Cameron Higgins to Kamana Kaimikaua at the 10:11 mark. After Sac State's Chris Diniz kicked a 43-yd field goal at the beginning of the fourth quarter, the Wildcats drove 52 yards in 10 plays with Higgins finding Josh Booker on a 13-yd scoring pass to forge a 17-17 tie.
The Hornets then ate up 4:46 of clock going just 55 yards in nine plays with Hilliard scoring the winning touchdown from 4-yds out with 3:23 left. The Wildcats, looking to tie or win, were stopped cold by the Hornet defense, losing the ball on downs at their own 27. The Hornets then drove to the Wildcat one-yard line where they took a knee to end the game.
WSU quarterback, Cameron Higgins, was 21-42-1 for 253 yards and two touchdowns. He now has 90 career touchdowns passes. Mike Phillips had seven catches for 72 yards and Joe Collins had five receptions for 110 yards.
The Wildcats are now 1-2 overall, 1-1 in Big Sky Conference play. Sac State is now 2-1 overall and 1-0 in Big Sky action. The Wildcats return home to meet future Big Sky Conference member, UC Davis, next Saturday, September 24 at 6:05 p.m. in Stewart Stadium. It is WSU's Homecoming Game.
