Women's Soccer falls to Washington State

OGDEN, Utah - An early lead didn't translate into a victory for the Weber State University women's soccer team on Sunday afternoon, but head coach Tim Crompton feels like the match was a huge step forward for the Wildcats.
Junior midfielder Emily Freshman scored in the 10th minute on a crossing pass from junior midfielder Ari Wood, but Washington State responded with four straight goals to capture a 4-1 victory at Wildcat Soccer Field.
"I was very pleased with the way we held on to the ball and moved it around," Crompton said. "Today was a big step forward for our players. I know the score doesn't look like it, but this is the first time in two years that we've played a very, very good team and been able to work the ball around well. This is definitely something that we can build on."
Washington State freshman Micaela Castain scored at hat trick for the Cougars (2-4-0), tallying the first, second and fourth goals. Maraih Cameron also scored for Washington State.
Weber State dropped to 0-4-0 with the loss, which saw the Wildcats take a season-high 11 shots and outshoot the Cougars 7-6 in the second half.
Crompton was a especially pleased with his squads ability to hold the ball on the attack against the Cougars.
Freshman defender Bailey Eames had a shot to cut into the deficit late, but the ball sunk too late and instead hit the crossbar and bounced back into the field of play.
Weber State returns to action on Thursday when it faces its third match of the season against an in-state rival with Utah (0-6-0) set to face the Wildcats at Wildcat Soccer Field. Kick-off is set for 3 p.m.
