A runaway first half by Northern Colorado spelled doom for the Weber State Wildcats, as the league-leading Bears showed why they are the cream of the Big Sky crop this season with a resounding 65-46 victory over Weber State, Saturday night in front of 2,299 inside Butler-Hancock Fieldhouse in Greeley, Colorado.
Northern Colorado led 6-5 following a jumper by WSU forward Kyle Bullinger at the 18:04 mark of the first half, then put together a 15-0 scoring run over the next four minutes for a 20-5 lead with 14:08 left in the half. The run was started by a three-pointer from guard Elliot Lloyd and ended with a three-pointer from Chris Kaba.
The Bears didn't let up, rolling to a 37-10 lead with 5:54 left on two free throws by Lloyd, and led 43-20 at halftime. The Wildcats finally shook the cobwebs out and closed the half with a 10-6 scoring run. Northern Colorado's defense held the Wildcats to just 6-23 (.261) shooting from the field and 3-14 (.214) from the three-point line.
The Wildcats out scored the Bears, 26-22, in the second half, holding them to just 5-20 (.250) from the field and 1-10 (.100) from the three-point arc, but could only get as close as 15 points, 59-44 with 4:27 left.
Weber State had just one player in double figure scoring. Scott Bamforth, who pour in 20 in Thursday night's 71-69 loss at Portland State, erupted for 16 second half points to finish with 19. The 'Cats had 16 turnovers and were out rebounded 38-27 for the game.
“Give Northern credit, they came out full of purpose and intensity which we didn't match,” said WSU head coach, Randy Rahe. “They showed why they are the most veteran team in our league. They overcame a bad night from their leading scorer and used their defense to make the difference. Veteran teams find ways to win when adversity strikes.”
Northern Colorado is now a perfect 7-0 in Big Sky play and 11-7 overall. The Bears and Wildcats each have six days off before meeting again next Saturday, January 29 at 7:05 p.m. (MST) at the Dee Events Center in Ogden, Utah. That also is the Altitude TV Game of the Week.
Weber State evens its overall record at 9-9, but fall to 3-4 in Big Sky play tied with Portland State, Northern Arizona, and if Eastern Washington defeats Sacramento State, they Eagles would also be at 3-4.
