OGDEN, Utah - When you're climbing a mountain, you don't get dropped off at the top.
With the conclusion of the Wildcats' non-conference schedule rapidly approaching, the ascent is picking up speed.
Led by a career performance from junior forward Amanda Hughes, the Weber State University women's basketball team took the next step on that journey with an 85-72 victory over California State University-Bakersfield on Saturday afternoon at the Dee Events Center.
"The biggest thing is keeping our composure," Weber State coach Bethann Ord said. "We talked about having to climb the mountain because you don't just get dropped off on top. We've just got to keep chipping away, and this was a chip in the right direction."
Hughes hit 10-of-17 shots from the field, knocking down a career-high 25 points, and pulled down 11 rebounds for her second double-double of the season, and fifth of her career.
"I just fed off my team's energy," Hughes said. "We just played with a determined attitude that we weren't going to lose."
Junior forward Shawnte Taylor added 12 points, the third time in four games she has reached double-figures scoring, and pulled down six rebounds.
Junior guard Megan Patterson and sophomore guard Justine Johnson each added 10 points for the Purple and White, with Johnson adding seven rebounds and three steals.
Senior point guard Caela Mohre, just a day after her graduation, had eight points, eight rebounds and five assists. Senior center Mikell Woodfield added 11 rebounds, eight points and a career-high four assists.
Sophomore guard Jordan Pfau also added nine points for the Wildcats, who shot 55.6 percent from the field in the second half, and pulled down a season high 56 rebounds, outrebounding the Roadrunners 56-36.
Bakersfield (3-8) took a 10-9 lead with 14:41 remaining first half, but a layup by Taylor just seconds later put Weber State back in the lead and the Wildcats would never trail again, surging ahead by as many as 21 before holding off a late charge to capture the victory.
The 85 points is a season high for Weber State and the most scored by a Wildcat squad against a Division 1 opponent since Nov. 29, 2008.
Weber State (2-8) remains home through Thursday when the Wildcats host Wyoming in the annual Field Trip Day. Tip-off with the Cowgirls is set for Noon.
