Wildcats Down Bengals for First Win

OGDEN, Utah -- The Weber State men's tennis team picked up its first win of the 2011 season on Tuesday with a 5-2 victory over Idaho State at the Ogden Athletic Club.
The Wildcats got up on the Bengals early, taking all three doubles matches for the doubles point. Simon Unger and Oliver Good took down Gilberto Azevado and Diego Cavalcanti 8-4 at No. 1. Dave Hintze and Landon Barlow teamed for an 8-4 win at No. 2 over Danel Barrenechea and Rodrigo Azevado, while Ciao Poitena and Peter Ramstromer Pello also won 8-4, defeating Nate Gross and Colton Pate at No. 3.
Hintze made it 2-0 for the Wildcats, cruising to a 6-0, 6-0 win over Dan Buckingham at No. 5 singles, but the Bengals got one back as Gilberto Azevedo defeated Ramstromer Pello 6-1, 6-0 in the No. 2 singles match.
Weber State earned all the points they would need with another pair of wins at No. 1 and 6. Unger defeated Barrenechea 6-2, 6-3 in the top position, while Good defeated Rodrigo Azevedo 6-3, 6-2 at No. 6.
Nate Gross pulled out a 6-4, 6-3 win over Ciao Poitena at No. 4, and Landon Barlow defeated Diego Cavalcanti 6-4, 6-7, 10-7 in the only match of the day to go to a third set.
Weber State improves to 1-7 on the season, while Idaho State falls to 0-4. The Wildcats will have nearly two weeks off before they take to the courts again, when they host Portland State on Sunday, Feb. 20 at 10:00 a.m.
