Wildcats Pull Out Win Over ISU

POCATELLO, Idaho -- The Weber State women's tennis team kept itself in position to earn a berth in the Big Sky Conference tournament on Wednesday as it pulled out a crucial 4-3 win over Idaho State at Reed Gym.
Idaho State put the pressure on the Wildcats early, taking the top two doubles matches for the initial point. Kristi Russell and Nittaya Phonharath earned the lone doubles win for the Wildcats with an 8-1 victory over Laura Severino and Zamira Vasquez at No. 3.
The doubles loss meant the Wildcats needed to win singles play to earn the match win, and they did just that, taking four of the six matchups.
The Bengals took a 2-0 lead as the first singles match in the books went the way of the home side as Laura Porras downed Annika Karlsen 6-0, 6-2.
Russell put Weber State on the board with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Rachel Ryan at No. 5, but Idaho State made it 3-1 when Zamira Vasquez got the best of Phonharath 6-1, 6-3 at No. 6.
Michelle Warwick started the ultimate rally for Weber State at the No. 4 position, scoring a 6-4, 6-1 win over Risa Fujiwara. Brittiny Moore took a first set tiebreaker en route to a 7-6 (7-4), 6-2 win over Rilee Moorhead at No. 2, and then Naseem Eslami came back from a 4-6 loss in the opening set to win the match for Weber State with a 6-1, 6-2 rally of her own at No. 1.
The Wildcats move to 4-10 overall and maintained fifth place in the Big Sky at 3-3. Idaho State dropped to 3-10 and failed to win its first Big Sky match of the year, falling to 0-6. The Wildcats wrap up Big Sky play this weekend with a crucial trip to Montana and Montana State as they continue to chase a playoff spot.
