OGDEN, Utah - Faced with its final opportunity to get ready for the Big Sky Conference season, the Weber State University women's volleyball turned in a disappointing effort in a straight-set setback to Boise State on Tuesday night.
Led by an 18-kill performance from Liz Harden, the Broncos staked out a 25-21, 25-19, 25-14 win over the Wildcats at Swenson Gym, finishing the match off in just 83 minutes.
"We just did not show up," Weber State coach Tom Peterson said. "That's our worst loss to date. I usually try to find something good to say about each match we play and I just don't have a whole lot of good stuff to say. It was terrible."
Junior outside hitter Bethany Wray led Weber State with 10 kills, but received little offensive support as no other Wildcat had more than five.
"It's so frustrating to see how far we have come and that we don't put it on the court," said sophomore team captain Shanae Langston said. "It's almost as if we are worried about what's going to happen if we win. It's frustrating to see our old habits sneak back into our game."
Weber State dropped to 0-10 with the loss, while Boise State improved to 5-3.
The Wildcats and Broncos went toe-to-toe for most of the first set, which featured 13 ties and six lead changes. The teams were tied at 19-19 before Boise surged ahead and scored six of the final eight points in the set.
WSU led 15-13 in the second set after strong early play, but didn't score another offensive point the rest of the set as the Broncos surged to a 12-4 finish in the set and a 2-0 lead in the match.
Coming out of intermission, Boise State completed the final set with 15 kills on 24 attempts without an attacking error as it cruised to the 11-point win and sweep.
Weber State will kick off Big Sky play on Friday when it travels to Cheney, Wash., to face Eastern Washington. First serve is set for 8 p.m.
