Eagles sweep 'Cats in Big Sky opener

CHENEY, Wash. - Junior outside hitter Bethany Wray had 13 kills to lead the Weber State University women's volleyball team on Friday night, but the Wildcats came up short in their Big Sky Conference opener against Eastern Washington.
Behind a balanced and efficient attack, the Eagles beat the Wildcats in straight sets, claiming a 25-16, 25-18, 25-22 victory at Reese Court.
Wray, who reached double-figures kills for the ninth time in 11 matches this season, also added seven digs and a pair of blocks.
Freshman outside hitter Mackenzie Clark had eight kills, while freshman libero Shelby Earl had eight digs.
The Wildcats did block well, with sophomore Briana Wilms tallying a career-high five blocks, while junior setter Caitlin Penrod had four blocks.
Eastern Washington captured victories in the first and second sets after jumping out to 12-6 advantages in both and carrying that momentum to take a 2-0 lead in the match.
Weber State battled back in the third set, which featured eight ties and four lead changes, but the Eagles pulled away from a 22-22 tie to score the final three points and take the victory.
Weber State fell to 0-1 in Big Sky play (0-11 overall) and will travel on Saturday to Portland, Ore., to face the Portland State Vikings at 8 p.m. at the Peter W. Stott Center. Portland State, the defending league champion, is 0-1 in Big Sky play and 4-9 overall after falling 3-1 to Idaho State on Friday night.
