OGDEN - BYU beat Weber State for the 10th straight time Saturday night at the Dee Events Center, winning 78-68 and snapping Weber State's three-game winning streak and 20-game home winning streak.
Brandon Davies posted a career-high 33 points and Tyler Haws added 23 points for the Cougars who improved to 7-3 with the win.
The Wildcats had an early 10-8 lead but BYU responded with a 10-2 run and never trailed again. The Cougars led 36-26 at halftime.
Weber State came out strong in the second half and started the half on a 14-6 run to cut the BYU lead to two points at 42-40 with 15:42 to play. The Cougars led by two again at 51-49 with 10:00 remaining when BYU went on a 14-2 over the next four minutes to take a 15-point lead and never looked back.
The Cougars shot 53 percent from the field, the best any team has shot against Weber State this season. BYU was also 18-20 from the free throw line, while the Wildcats shot just 14-25 from the line. The Cougars also outrebounded WSU 36-28. The Wildcats shot 44 percent from the field and just 21 percent from three-point land.
"BYU played terrific basketball tonight and deserves a lot of credit," said WSU head coach Randy Rahe. "Brandon Davies was outstanding. I thought we had some really good looks and executed well we just couldn't knock down the shots. We were a little bit wound up for the game and I thought our inexperience showed just a little bit at times. I was proud of our effort and I think a game like this will help us down the line to make us a better team."
WSU junior Davion Berry led Weber State with a career-high 25 points. Berry finished the night 10-14 from the field and had two rebounds and two assists. He scored 16 of his points in the second half.
Gelaun Wheelwright had a season-high 12 points and Jordan Richardson added eight for the Wildcats. Frank Otis and Joel Bolomboy each had seven rebounds.
Davies was 14-17 from the field for his 33 points and pulled down a game-high eight rebounds.
The loss snaps Weber State's 20-game home winning streak, which was the fourth longest streak in the nation, and drops the Wildcats to 4-3 on the season. WSU will now open Big Sky Conference play next week playing at Eastern Washington Thursday and at Portland State on Saturday.
