OGDEN, Utah -- The Weber State women's soccer team rebounded from a disappointing result on Thursday with a great performance on Saturday in a 3-1 win over Sacramento State at Wildcat Soccer Field.
"I was confident that we would come out today and get a good result," said WSU head coach Tim Crompton. "We played well on Thursday, but made some errors that gave up easy goals. Today we cleaned up those errors, and were able to convert some of our offensive chances."
The Wildcats pressured the Hornets from the opening kick, racking up several offensive chances over the first 20 minutes of play, and Sacramento State was fortunate on multiple occasions to remain level on the scoreboard.
Sacramento State's best scoring chance of the the first half came in the 27th minute, when Alexa Heinzer gathered a rebound off a corner kick at the top of the box and fired a shot at the left side of the goal. The ball beat WSU goalkeeper Ryann Waldman wide, but WSU defender Bailey Eames was in place at the left post, and cleared the shot just in front of the line.
Weber State finally broke through in the 35th minute, as Mackenzie Day got on the end of a cross from Ryley Hansen, who had received a short corner from Chansi Crompton. Day headed home the cross for her fifth goal of the season.
The goal tied Day for the team lead in goals on the season with Mackenzie Harrison, for nearly 16 minutes of game time, at least.
Harrison broke the tie in the 50th minute, converting a penalty kick after being taken down in the box, and added another goal in the 57th minute as she took a through ball from Crompton in the right side of the box, and beat CSUS goalkeeper Kimberly Mata with a shot to the left post.
Harrison's brace is the second of her career, as she also tallied two goals in a win over Wyoming back on Sep. 13.
"Mackenzie played a great match today," said Crompton. "In our system, our forwards play a great deal of the match with their backs to the goal, and we ask them to hold the ball to build chances. Because of that, she takes a lot of punishment, and has to mentally prepare herself for that each game. She came out very determined and prepared today, and was very effective creating chances up top for us."
In the 71st minute, Sacramento State broke onto the scoreboard. Kassi Anast served a ball from about 30 yards out on the right wing, and Gabriela Trenton found an opening in the mix in the box, and headed home the ball.
Weber State outshot the Hornets 24 to 10 overall on the day, and put 14 on-goal, compared to five for Sacramento State.
Waldman recorded three saves to earn the win for the Wildcats, while Mata was busy in goal for Sacramento State, posting 11 saves.
Seniors Alyssa Amano, Sarah Thurston, Bailey Eames and Waldman each played their final career match at Wildcat Soccer Field for Weber State.
