OGDEN, Utah -- The Weber State volleyball team suffered a four-set loss to the University of Montana on Friday night at Swenson Gym, dropping to 5-14 overall and 1-4 in conference play. Montana took the match 25-18, 21-25, 25-22, 25-18.
"I'm disappointed in the way that we came out and played tonight," said WSU head coach Tom Peterson. "I don't think that we lost because we were outmatched. We lost because we made too many mistakes. Montana is a well coached team, and they figured some things out against us early. They played a solid match, and made a lot fewer mistakes than we did."
The Wildcats jumped out early in the first set, scoring five of the first six points of the match, but the Grizzlies (6-8 overall; 3-2 Big Sky) responded with a 9-1 run, and WSU would get no closer than four points for the remainder of the set.
The Wildcats responded with what would be their lone set win of the night, as they hit .097 while holding Montana to a -.033 hitting percentage. WSU took the lead at 6-5 and never looked back, holding off any Grizzly charge to take the set 25-21.
Montana came back after the break with their two biggest hitting sets of the match, hitting .275 in the third, and .290 in the decisive fourth. Weber State hit .188 in the third set, their largest percentage of the night, but never led, and hit .000 in the fourth as Montana finished off the win.
"I felt like, as the match went on tonight, we started to look nervous," said Peterson. "At this point in the season, playing on our home floor and in front of our home crowd, those things should help us, not make us nervous. We need to come back tomorrow, and play a strong game."
Weber State's Rebecca Fuchs recorded a team-high 12 kills, while Aubrey Biggs and Ciera Borho joined her in double figures with 10 kills each. Borho and McKay Tarbox tied for game-high honors in digs with 15 each, and Audrey Hunter led the team with six blocks.
Montana's Kayla Reno led all players with 14 kills on the night, while her teammate Brooke Bray added 10 and Kelsey Schile and Natalie Jones each chipped in with eight. Sadie Ahearn led the Grizz with 14 digs, and Kortney James and Natalie Jones each had seven blocks.
