Wildcats Cruise To 6-1 Win Over ISU

OGDEN, Utah -- The Weber State women's tennis team grabbed its first win of the 2013 season in convincing fashion on Tuesday, as the Wildcats cruised to a 6-1 win over Idaho State at the Ogden Athletic Club.
"This was a real team effort today," said WSU head coach Jonas Ehrlin. "I was really pleased with the way the girls came back after dropping a tight match with Seattle. They came out extremely determined, and it showed in the result."
Weber State jumped on its conference-rivals early, grabbing wins at No. 1 and 3 doubles to earn the opening point. Kristi Elmer and Thais Kurer defeated Svenja Tegtmeier and Wiebke Boeckmann 8-4 at No. 1, while Nittaya Phonharath and Carly Lloyd downed Marian Tangarife and Laura Theus 8-2 at No. 3. The Wildcats also had a lead in the No. 2 spot with Ashley Tanner and Michelle Warwick ahead of Kasey Bacon and Madelyn Weltzin 6-5, but the match was called with the doubles point already in hand.
In singles play, the Wildcats picked up right where they left off in doubles. Elmer handily beat Weltzin at No. 2, dropping only a single game in a 6-0, 6-1 win. Elmer's doubles partner, Kurer, also won in singles with a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Zamira Vasquez at No. 4. The pair are each on a four-match personal winning streak, having won in singles and doubles against Seattle in the team's previous outing.
At No. 1 singles, Tanner defeated Bacon 7-5, 6-2, while Annika Karlsen defeated Laura Theus 7-6 (9-7), 6-4 in the No. 6 spot. Phonharath took the No. 3 match in three sets, getting past Tangarife 6-3, 4-6, 6-4.
The Wildcats, who improved to 1-3 on the season, will next head to Las Vegas, where they will face off against Pacific, New Mexico State, and UNLV this weekend.
