Cross country heads to BYU Autumn Classic

Cross country opens season at Utah Open

The Weber State men's and women's cross country teams opened action for the 2013 season Friday at the Utah Open.

The Wildcat women's team finished second in the meet with the men's team taking third.

On the women's side the Wildcats only ran a few of the top runners returning from last season. WSU totaled 56 points in the meet to finish behind Boise State who had 23. Utah was third with 58 points.

The top finisher for the Wildcats was freshman Kelsey Braithwaite who finished third overall in the meet with a time of 14:22.4 on the 4K course. Sophomore Jamie Stokes took sixth overall at 14:41.1.

Alice Keller was 13th with Amanda Ward finishing 21st and Ashley Kealamakia taking 26th overall.

“I was pleased with our performance and it was a good opportunity for us to get several others some experience in a meet,” said WSU head coach Paul Pilkington. “Kelsey and Jamie both ran really good races.”

On the men's side BYU won the meet with a total of 28 points, placing four runners in the top 10. Boise State was second with 34 points and the Wildcats took third with 66 points.

Junior Trevor Ricks was WSU's top finisher, taking sixth overall with a time of 19:18.1 on the 6K course. Junior Tip Worob was 12th at 19:33.9 and Tyler Robinson was 19th at 20:22.7.

Three Wildcat freshmen got an chance to compete as Preston Johnson, Jacob Calvillo and Andrew Whetten rounded out the Wildcat lineup.

“Our top three runners all had solid races,” Pilkington said. “We are going to need our freshmen to get closer to them.”

The Wildcats are red shirting Mike Hardy, one of the top runners off last year's squad.

Weber State will next compete at the BYU Invitational next Saturday in Provo.
