Wildcat volleyball drops final two matches in Reno

RENO, Nev. – The Wildcats came up short twice on Saturday, dropping their final two matches of the Wolf Pack Invitational.
The Weber State University women's volleyball team fell in straight sets to Illinois State (25-9, 25-21, 25-15) to open the day's action, and then dropped a five-set heart-breaker to Grand Canyon (17-25, 29-27, 25-20, 18-25, 15-9) to wrap up the two-day, four-match tournament.
The Wildcats fell to 3-5 with the losses.
Against the Redbirds, junior outside hitter Audrey Biggs led the Wildcats with eight kills and sophomore outside hitter Rebecca Fuchs added seven, but Weber State managed just 23 kills in the match.
Against the Antelopes, Fuchs had 14 kills, eight digs, three blocks and a pair of service aces, while Biggs added 14 kills and three blocks.
Sophomore middle blocker Audrey Hunter recorded a season-high nine kills and seven blocks, while freshman Tanisha Langston added eight kills and six blocks. Sophomore outside hitter/setter Samantha Staker had 35 assists and seven digs, while junior libero McKay Tarbox finished with 19 digs.
Weber State captured the first set of the match to take a 1-0 lead, and appeared on the brink of taking a 2-0 advantage after rallying from a 23-15 deficit to take a 26-25 lead in the second set, but Grand Canyon rallied from set point to capture it and make it 1-1.
The Antelopes won the third set to take the 2-1 lead, but the Wildcats quickly countered with a fourth-set win to set up the decisive fifth set.
With the deciding set tied at 8-8, Grand Canyon finished the match on a 7-1 surge to capture the set and the match.
Weber State will be back in action on Tuesday at Swenson Gym when the Wildcats host in-state rival Utah State. First serve is set for 7 p.m.
