BOISE, Idaho – The Weber State University women's soccer saw its unbeaten run end by the slimmest of margins on Sunday afternoon.
Washington State's Nicole Setterlund scored a header off a corner kick in the seventh minute and that was the only tally of the day as the Cougars edged out the Wildcats 1-0 at Boas Soccer Complex in Boise, Idaho.
“The girls played well in the first half and both overtimes against Boise,” Weber State coach Tim Crompton said. “In the first half against WSU, we struggled to wrap our minds around their size and the physicality of the game. We adjusted and played well in the second period.
“It was disappointing we gave up the goal on a set piece, but you have to give the WSU player credit. It was a nice finish.”
The loss ended Weber State's four-match unbeaten run to start the season.
Washington State (4-0-1) outshot the Wildcats 15-2, but only placed three of those attempts on frame. Weber State had one shot on goal, by senior midfielder Alyssa Amano in the second half. Freshman forward Lana Willard also tallied a shot for the Wildcats.
“Overall, the girls played hard and had some good stretches this weekend,” Crompton said. “We played tremendous team defense.”
Weber State (2-1-2) will be back in action on Friday in Laramie, Wyo., when the Wildcats take on the Wyoming Cowgirls at the Madrid Sports Complex. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m.
