Wildcats See Good Results at Mountain Regionals

Wildcats Split Pair of Matches in Las Vegas

LAS VEGAS -- The Weber State men's tennis team split a pair of matches on Friday at the Fertitta Tennis Complex at the University of Nevada-Las Vegas, with a 5-2 win over UC Riverside and a 4-2 loss to Southern Mississippi in the first half of a four-match trip.

Against the Highlanders, the Wildcats took the doubles point behind wins in the No. 1 and 3 matches. Oliver Good and Sanjay Goswami defeated Cooper Bridge and Michael Carella 6-3 at No. 1, while Landon Barlow and Caio Poitena downed Julian Ruffin and Marcus Vizcarra 6-4 at No. 3. Todd Fought and Jakub Gewert led 5-4 in the No. 2 spot, but the match was left unfinished after the Wildcats had secured the point.

Weber State secured the win by taking four of the six singles matches, including wins in the top three spots in the lineup.  Gewert defeated Luis Gastao 6-3, 6-1 in the No. 1 match, Todd Fought took down Jack Felich 6-1, 6-2 at No. 2, and Good won in three sets 6-5, 1-6, 1-0 (10-7) against Ruffin at No. 3.

Goswami eanred the fourth singles point for WSU with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Sean Yun in the No. 6 match.

In the team's afternoon match, Southern Mississippi jumped ahead early, securing the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and 3. Gewert and Fought scored a win at No. 2, defeating Vasco Valverde and Chao-Yu Huang 6-3.

In singles, Gewert and Fought each won again to give the 'Cats their only two points of the match. Gewert defeated Brad Marriott 6-1, 6-4 at No. 1, while Fought got past Paulo Alvarado in three sets. Fought rallied from a 6-3 first set loss to win the final two sets 6-3, 6-2 for the victory.

Good nearly tied the score at three points apiece as he split a pair of sets with Valverde and then took the third set to 5-5. Valverde eventually won the final game to score the clinching point with a 6-2, 3-6, 6-5 victory.

The Wildcats, who moved to 2-3 on the season, will play two more matches on the trip, as they face UNLV on Saturday and New Mexico State on Sunday.
