Tarbox reaches 1,000 digs, Wildcats fall in five

OGDEN, Utah – The Weber State women's volleyball team hosted in-state rival Southern Utah on Friday night. Both teams came out with passion but it was the Thunderbirds that snuck out of Ogden with a five-set victory, 25-21, 22-25, 25-21, 22-25, 15-13.
The loss drops the Wildcats to 6-16, 2-6 in Big Sky Conference play. Also, the Wildcats dropped their record in five-set matches to 1-6 on the season.
“It was a tough loss but athletes and competitors will take a loss hard,” WSU head coach Tom Peterson said. “That is ok because good athletes find a way to come back from it. We will comeback. We have to comeback because there is no alternative. Even in the loss, I feel that we treated the fans to a great match.”
Audrey Biggs went over 20 plus kills for the eighth time this season as she had a game-high 24 and added a career-high 18 digs. That was her fourth double-double of the season. Amanda Varley also reached double digits in kills with 13 and a career-high six digs. Taylor Christensen continued to have a good week with 50 assists and seven digs. That is the second time in her career that she has had a match with 50 or more assists.
But the story of the night was McKay Tarbox, who continues to put her name all over the record books. Tarbox entered the match 12 digs shy of 1,000 for her career and she wasted no time reaching that mark. She recorded dig number 12 during the second set. She finished the night with a match-high 24 digs.
The match was full of drama as both teams were intent to keep each set as close as possible. There was 15 times in the second set alone, when the score was tied. The stats were also very similar throughout the whole match as both teams had 58 kills. Also, the Thunderbirds narrowly edged the Wildcats on assists, 58-54.
The Wildcats will now hit the road as they will travel to take on the University of Idaho on Thursday, October 23.
