OGDEN, Utah – The Weber State Wildcats entered one of the toughest parts of their schedule on Thursday. The first stop on their five game road trip was a match up with the University of Idaho. The visit to Moscow was the first for the Wildcats since 1995. The Wildcats were unable to recover from a slow start and lost in three sets, 25-21, 25-22, 28-26.
The loss drops the Wildcats record to 6-17, 2-7 in Big Sky Conference play. The vicotry by the Vandals and a loss by North Dakota earlier in the night moved them into first place in the North division with a conference record of 7-2.
“I think that we started out a little too hesitant again but we got better as the match went along,” WSU head coach Tom Peterson said. “It was a closer match than the stats will say it was. We had points during the match when we were outplaying them but were unable to sustain that momentum.”
Audrey Biggs, who came into the match with a Big Sky leading 4.22 kills per set, finished the match with 20 kills and hit a.357. This was the ninth match this season that Biggs has finished with more than 20 kills.
“When she gets into a groove, she is hard to stop,” Peterson said. “Even the other head coach was commenting on how we have a bunch of good arms. I thought I was the only one who used that word for our hitters.”
Samantha Staker had 8 kills and Amanda Varley added 7 kills as the Wildcats had 42 as a team. Megan Thompson was able to disrupt the Vandals as she accounted for 6 blocks and added 4 kills. McKay Tarbox had a match-high 14 digs and added one service ace to her team-high 21 for the season. Taylor Christensen dished out 36 assists, which was a season-high for a three-set match.
The team continues their road trip Saturday when they travel to take on Eastern Washington. The Eagle holds a 40-30 advantage in the all-time series. First serve is set for 8 p.m.
