OGDEN, Utah – In front of over 3,000 screaming fans the Weber State women's basketball team came from a 16 point deficit to win 65-63 over the University of Denver.
Denver started out with a 16-6 run to open the game. They carried that momentum throughout the first half taking a 13 point lead into halftime. Weber State came out ready to work in the second half. With seven minutes remaining in the game WSU brought the score within five points. A made free throw by Zakiyyah Shahid-Martin put the Wildcats ahead with two minutes left in the game. Shahid-Martin took to the baseline with 0:07 left on the clock to make the game winning lay-up.
“I was really proud that all the girls stepped up when we needed them,” Head Coach Bethann Ord said. “We were not as aggressive as we needed to be in the first half and once we re-focused we were able to do some great things.”
Weber State had four Wildcats in the double digits. Shahid-Martin led the Wildcats with 15 points earning a new season high. Freshman Jocelyn Adams came off the bench with a career high of 14 points and contributed eight rebounds. Jalen Carpenter had 12 points and Kailie Quinn added 11 points and seven rebounds. Regina Okoye had six steals and six rebounds.
Weber State shot 40 percent from the field and 85 percent from the free throw line. The Wildcats out rebounded DU 39-29.
“We worked really hard on free-throws and shooting this week in practice,” Ord said. “We just tightened up those little things and it made a huge difference for us today.”
The Wildcats are set to host nationally-ranked Oklahoma State on Dec. 18. The Wildcats step into conference play on Jan. 1 against Eastern Washington.
