Weber State falls 55-49 to No. 19 Oklahoma State

OGDEN, Utah – With the game tied and three minutes left in the Weber State University's women's basketball couldn't find the lead and fell 55-49 to No. 19 Oklahoma State Cowgirls Thursday evening.
WSU came out to battle. The Wildcats held the Cowgirls within three points until 6:15 in the first half when OSU went on a 17-6 run to end 30-19. OSU maintained their lead until the WSU tied it up with three minutes left in the game. The Wildcats had to foul to stop the clock and OSU made four free throws to solidify their 55-49 victory.
“It's hard when you lose when you have an opportunity at the end like that,” Head Coach Bethann Ord said. “I am so proud of the way the girls battled.We were expecting to get hit hard and we were resilient. We kept our heads up.”
Junior Jalen Carpenter had the high for the Wildcats scoring 14 points. Regina Okoye had eight points and freshman Jocelyn Adams had six for the Wildcats. Okoye led the team in rebounds with seven and Adams, Carpenter and freshman Kailie Quinn had six each. Okoye had four steals on the night.
OSU had three players in double figures. Roshunda Johnson led the Cowgirls with 16 points. LaShawn Jones had 13 points and Utah native, Brittney Martin had 11. Martin and Jones led the Cowgirls in rebounds having seven each.
Weber State shot 34 percent from the field and 83 percent from the free throw line compared to OSU's 44 percent from the field and 52 percent from the free throw line. The Wildcats out rebounded OSU 36-32. The Wildcats had 18 turnovers to the Cowgirls 14. WSU had the lead over the nationally ranked Cowgirls for 5:04 of the game.
“We worked hard for all 40 minutes it's unfortunate we loss,” Carpenter said. “It feels good to know that we are capable of playing with top teams in the country.”
The Wildcats now have a week long break before starting Big Sky Conference play. Eastern Washington will be at the Dee Thursday Jan. 1 at 7 p.m. followed by Idaho Saturday Jan. 3.
