Late push not enough, 'Cats fall 59-50 to USD

OGDEN, Utah – Weber State University's women's basketball team fell 59-50, to the University of San Diego, Saturday afternoon.
Weber State jumped out to an early 9-3 lead but with 8:26 left in the first half, San Diego went on a 9-0 run taking a 22-13 lead. The Toreros maintained that lead going into half-time with a score of 27-19. Weber State had dug themselves into a 22 point deficit with 14:10 to go in the second half. The Wildcats battled back however and lost by nine points with a final score of 58-50.
“We had a really good start,” Weber State head coach Bethann Ord said. “For whatever reason we dug ourselves in a hole going into half and had to dig ourselves out of a bigger hole. I'm super proud of the girls because they didn't quit and battled to the end.”
Junior Jalen Carpenter led the Wildcats with 14 points and seven rebounds. Junior Regina Okoye had her third double double of the year having 10 points and 10 steals. Brittney Dunbar and Brianna Averette each contributed eight points for the Wildcats.
Okoye beat her own individual single-game steal record with her 10 on the night. She is currently tied for second in the Big Sky conference record in single game steals. Okoye now has 192 career steals.
“The girls are really holding each other accountable to get better,” Ord said. “They are pushing each other and taking care of each other and I love how this team sticking together through everything this season.”
Weber State shot 31.4 percent from the field, 25 percent from the three and 81 percent from the free throw line. Averette went 8-8 from the line and Carpenter went 4-4. The Wildcats were out rebounded 48-31. The two teams combined for a total of 55 turnovers. Weber State had a total of 20 steals.
Weber State travels down to Provo, Utah to take on the BYU Cougars Tuesday, Dec. 9 before hosting Denver Monday, Dec. 15 at noon for the annual Field Trip Day.
“We definitely have a tough schedule coming up but that is going to help us get ready for Big Sky play,” Ord said.
