Barlow Named Big Sky Player of the Week

Wildcats Pull Out Tough Win Over Montana State

OGDEN, Utah -- The Weber State men's tennis team rallied in singles play on Sunday at the Ogden Athletic Club to pull out a 4-3 win over Montana State and keep their unbeaten streak in Big Sky play alive.

The Wildcats came out flat in doubles play, allowing the Bobcats to score wins at No. 1 and 2 to take the opening point of the match. Landon Barlow and Caio Poitena won at No. 3 for Weber State, taking an 8-6 win over Kenny Dodd and Javier Martin-Morillas.

"Our slow start was my fault," said WSU head coach Brad Ferreira. "Having four tough matches scheduled in one week was a bit much. I was worried that it would carry over into singles and cost us a win, but the guys showed a lot of heart to dig deep and give a great effort after we dropped the doubles point."

Todd Fought and Sanjay Goswami won straight-sets matches to give Weber State a spark as singles play continued. Fought took down Markus Schleuter 6-1, 6-4 in the No. 2 match, while Goswami continued his fine play from the week with a 6-3, 6-0 win over Dodd in the No. 6 match.

After the two singles wins gave WSU a one point lead, Montana State evened the match at 2-2 with a win in the No. 1 singles spot, and the Bobcats got within a point of victory with a win in the No. 4 match.

That left the fate of the match with Oliver Good in the No. 3 match, and Barlow in the No. 5 match, and the Wildcats needed both wins to grab the win.

Good did his part, tying the match at 3-3 as he came back from a first-set deficit to claim a 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 win over Martin-Morillas, and Barlow clinched the win with a 6-3, 2-6, 6-0 victory over Diego Campos.

"Oliver played like a true senior to get us even, and Landon really came through with a decisive third set to finish the win off for us," said Ferreira. "Those two played some great tennis under some tremendous pressure."

The Wildcats improve to 11-9 overall and stayed perfect in the Big Sky with a 7-0 record. Montana State dropped to 8-6 overall and 4-2 in the Big Sky. WSU will next take to the courts on Saturday, April 5 with another crucial conference match as they host Montana (5-8; 3-0 Big Sky) at Noon.
