Wildcats Down SUU for First Big Sky Win

OGDEN, Utah -- The Weber State women's tennis team picked up its first Big Sky Conference win of the 2014 season on Saturday with a 4-3 win over Southern Utah.
The Wildcats won at No. 2 and 3 doubles to take the doubles point, which would prove to be vital as the teams split the six singles matches. Thais Kurer and Nittaya Phonharath defeated Nastia Vasileva and Madeline Skaras 8-5 in the No. 2 doubles match, while Ashley Tanner and Michelle Warwick cruised to an 8-2 win over Jane Marushko and Sarah Lundin at No. 3.
In singles, Agata Bachanek, Phonharath, and Annika Karlsen each earned points for the Wildcats, with Phonharath scoring the match clinching point to break a 3-3 tie.
Bachanek downed Alex Ivanova 6-2, 7-5 in the No. 1 match, and Karlsen handily defeated Lundin 6-3, 6-0 in the No. 6 match. After Southern Utah earned points with wins at No. 2, 3, and 4, the match fell to the No. 5 match, where Phonharath pulled out a tough point with a 3-6, 6-2, 7-6 (7-4) tiebreak win over Skaras.
The win moved Weber State to 7-13 overall and 1-6 in the Big Sky, while SUU dropped to 6-9 overall and 2-6 in the conference. The win also snapped a four-match losing skid for the Wildcats.Â
