PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - The Weber State women's volleyball team were far from home but were looking to make some noise as they opened up their season at The Hawk's Holiday Hulabaloo in Princess Anne, MD.
The Wildcats beat the hosts, University of Maryland Eastern Shores, in four sets in their first match of the season before falling to South Dakota State University in 3 sets in the afternoon.
Against the Hawks, the Wildcats pulled away after losing the first set, 23-25, 25-18, 25-19, 25-21 and dominanated nearly every statistical category.
The combination of senior outside hitter Audrey Biggs and sophomore outside hitter Ciera Borho were just too much the hosts. Borho matched a career-high with 14 kills and hit .379, while Biggs added 13 kills and 6 blocks. They finished the match hitting an outstanding .302.
Sophomore middle blocker Megan Thompson was a force on the front line as she accounted for 9 of the team's total 18 blocks. Redshirt Freshman Taylor Christensen had a match-high 36 assists while senior libero McKay Tarbox led the Wildcats with 18 digs.
In the match against the Jackrabbits, the Wildcats had an early lead in the first set before seeing SDSU storm back and take the set. That momentum continued on for the rest of the match as the Wildcats fell 22-25, 16-25, 18-25.
Biggs lead the team with a match-high 12 kills but the team struggled to overcome the 12 service errors. The Wildcats hit a season low .052 in the match.
Weber State will be back in action for day two of the The Hawk's Holiday Hulabalo, taking on Fairleigh Dickinson and Maryland Baltimore County on Saturday at 8 a.m. and 12 p.m., respectively.
