Wildcats fall 35-20 at Stephen F. Austin

NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Weber State dropped its fourth straight game to start the season, falling 35-20 at Stephen F. Austin Saturday night at Homer Bryce Stadium.
The Lumberjacks jumped out to the early lead with a 15-yard touchdown by Gus Johnson just five minutes into the game. The only other scoring came late in the second quarter as Zach Conque punched in a one-yard touchdown to give SFA a 14-0 lead at halftime.
The Wildcats had the ball for 19:00 in the first half but had eight penalties and were just 1-of-7 on third down conversions.
After a Wildcat fumble early in the third quarter, the Lumberjacks scored again on a Conque rush to take a 21-0 lead.
Weber State came back and got on the board when Billy Green found Shyadon Kehano for a seven-yard touchdown to cut the lead to 21-7 midway through the third quarter.
Green found Kehano again for a 24-yard touchdown to make it a 24-13 game with 2:20 left in the third quarter.
Stephen F. Austin came right back with a 26-yard touchdown run to make it a 28-13 lead early in the fourth quarter and then added a 28-yard touchdown pass a few minutes later to take a 35-13 lead with 8:00 left.
The 'Cats added a touchdown from Green to Smith with 6:00 left but could not score again.
Penalties and turnovers once again proved costly for the Wildcats. WSU totaled 15 penalties for 107 yards. The 'Cats also had three turnovers with two interceptions and one fumble.
Weber State put up some strong offensive numbers led by Shaydon Kehano and Zach Smith. Kehano had 12 receptions for a career-high 122 yards and two touchdowns. He also became the 23rd player in WSU history with 100 career receptions.
Smith added a career-high 147 yards rushing on 22 carries. Blake Green finished the night 30-of-49 passing for 273 yards with three touchdowns and two interceptions.
Emmett Tela led the defense with nine tackles.
The loss drops the 'Cats to 0-4 to start the season. They will be back on the road to finish a three-game road trip and will open Big Sky play next Saturday at Southern Utah in Cedar City.
