CHENEY, Wash. – A disastrous second half spelled doom for the Wildcats' hopes of salvaging a road split during the opening weekend of the Big Sky Conference season.
Despite scoring first, the Weber State University women's soccer team suffered a 5-1 loss to Eastern Washington on Sunday afternoon, falling to 0-2-0 in league action.
“Certainly there are games in every season when the outcome does not reflect the true nature of how the players played the game, and today's game is one of those contests,” Weber State coach Tim Crompton said. “Nevertheless, the result stands and we need to move on from it. We have been faced with many challenges so far this season, and we continue to meet those challenges head first. At the end of the day, we will be better for it.”
The Wildcats (3-8-0 overall) looked like the sharper team in the first half and sophomore forward Lana Willard found the back of the net in the 12th minute to put Weber State in front 1-0.
Eastern Washington equalized in the 29th minute when Chloe Williams hit a deep rocket into the upper corner of the net to make it 1-1, where it would remain until halftime.
The Eagles (1-1-0 Big Sky, 4-4-0 overall) pulled ahead just into the second half after hitting the ball in off a corner kick, and then made it 3-1 just two minutes later during a one-on-one. With Weber State pressed forward pushing to get back into the match, EWU scored their final two off of rapid counterattacks.
Weber State will return to action on Friday when they host Northern Colorado at Wildcat Soccer Field. Kickoff is set for 3 p.m.
