POCATELLO, Idaho – It certainly wasn't the prettiest of matches, but the Wildcats got the job done.
Senior defensive midfielder Abbey Clayton corralled the rebound of junior central midfielder Chansi Crompton's initial shot and punched it home in the 53rd minute as the Weber State University women's soccer team dropped Idaho State 1-0 on Friday afternoon at Davis Field.
With the win, Weber State's 10th of the season, the Wildcats have clinched the No. 4 seed in next week's Big Sky Conference tournament in Moscow, Idaho, and will face No. 5 seed Montana at 2 p.m. on Thursday at Idaho's Guy Wicks Field.
Weber State wrapped up its conference season with a 6-4-0 mark, and is 5-1-0 in its last six outings. The Wildcats improved to 10-8-1 overall, securing their second double-digit win season in the last three years, and clinching a winning record.
“Idaho State is always a difficult environment to play in, however the girls remained composed from start to finish,” Weber State coach Tim Crompton said. “The regular season is behind us now, and our focus is all about our game next Thursday.”
Weber State peppered Idaho State goalkeeper Sheridan Hapsic early and often, outshooting the Bengals (0-10-0 Big Sky, 1-17-1 overall) by 14-3 margin in shots on goal.
Sophomore goalkeeper Sydnie Brough earned the shutout between the pipes, her first clean sheet of the year and the Wildcats' fourth overall. It was also just the third time in 19 matches this season that Idaho State was shut out, despite its sole win this year coming over NCAA Division II opponent Westminster in overtime.
Crompton's assist on Clayton's match-winning goal is her 24th career helper, further extending her Weber State career record, and closing the junior within one assist of tying the Big Sky Conference's career assists record of 25, which is currently held by former Idaho State star Annamarie Hofstetter.
With Friday's action coming to a close, the final pairings for the Big Sky Conference tournament were set in stone.
Top seed and host Idaho and No. 2 seed Northern Colorado will enjoy a quarterfinal-round bye, while No. 3 seed Eastern Washington will take on No. 6 seed Sacramento State in the tournament's opening match on Thursday at 11 a.m. MT. The Hornets were the last team to qualify, doing so with a dramatic 2-1 overtime win over Portland State after Northern Arizona – which held the final spot heading into the day – faltered with a draw at Southern Utah.
