Wildcats fall 0-3 to Vikings

PORTLAND, Ore – Weber State University volleyball team fell in three sets to Portland State. Megan Thompson led the Wildcats with 11 kills which was her 14th time hitting double figures.
"I am dissappointed in what we did tonight," Head Coach Jeremiah Larsen said. "This was a massive step backward in our development. We have a very long way to go before we can be considered an elite team in our confrerecne and hopefully tonight is a wake up call to us that we have to work harder."
In the first set the Wildcats jumped out to a 4-0 lead from two Viking errors and two big kills from Thompson. PSU then went on a 6-0 run to take the lead at 6-4. Weber State couldn't find enough success to keep up with Portland State and fell in the first set 25-15. Weber State hit 7 kills off 19 attacks in the first set for a .263 percentage with only two errors.
Portland State took off early in the second set with taking a 6-2 lead. Two kills by Andrea Hale brought the Wildcats within two points before the Vikings scored four unanswered points. PSU had a 22-13 lead over WSU when the Wildcats went on a 7-0 run to bring the score to 22-20. A kill by Audrey Hunter postponed game point but not long enough for the Wildcats to claim a set victory. Portland State claimed the second set 25-21 leading the Wildcats 2-0 going into the half time break.
The second set proved to be one of the best defensively for the Wildcats as they put up five blocks that set.
Weber State came off the half-time break with a little fire matching PSU point for point for a tied match at 7-7. PSU went on a 5-2 run taking the lead. Kills from Thompson and Langston kept the Wildcats in the match. The Vikings had four unanswered points at the end of the set bringing the score 24-18. Â Â A kill by Thompson put off game point before PSU's Pati Anae had a kill to end the set 25-19.
Thompson hit a .471 percentage with 11 kills and 17 attacks with only three errors. Langston also had a good night for the Wildcats with seven kills and 16 attacks for a .312 percentage. Langston also had the game high of 11 digs followed closely by Thamires Cavalcanti who had eight.
Thompson led the team in blocks on the night having six, which is her 15th time having five or more blocks in a match. Weber State had nine team blocks to PSU's eight. Weber State had 11 attack errors to PSU's 17.
The Wildcats now drop to 5-21 on the season and 1-13 in Big Sky Conference play. They will return home to the Swenson Gym for the final matches of the season to take on Montana State and Idaho State.Â
"I'm interested to see what type of character our team has this last weekend of home games," Larsen said.Â
