Cats start Big Sky with win over Portland State

The Weber State women's tennis team picked up its first Big Sky Conference win of the 2015 season on Sunday with a 4-3 win over Portland State.
The Wildcats won at No. 1 and 2 doubles to take the doubles point, which would prove to be vital as the teams split the six singles matches. The team of Agata Bachanek and Kristi Elmer took down Dane Vorster and Siena Peri 6-4 in the No. 1 doubles match, while Dominique Beauvais and Romy Dodd-Stephens cruised to a 6-0 win over Tracy Dong and Sabina-Elena Preda at No. 2.
In singles, Bachanek, Dodd-Stephens, and Devi Hasan each earned points for the Wildcats in the singles matches.
Bachanek downed Vorster 6-3, 6-0 in the No. 1 match, and Dodd-Stephens handily defeated Preda 6-0, 6-2 in the No. 4 match. After Portland State earned points with wins at No. 2, 3, and 5, the match fell to the No. 6 match, where Hasan pulled out a clutch 6-2, 6-3 victory over Ayaka Terakawa.
"Today was a really good win for us against a good Portland State team," Head Coach Jonas Erhlin said. "We have worked hard on getting off to good starts in doubles and it showed today. I'm very proud of the team and how they played in doubles. This young team is gelling fast and it shows on the court."
The win moved Weber State to 4-2 overall and 1-0 in the Big Sky. The Wildcats will continue Big Sky play by hosting Eastern Washington Saturday, March 7 and Idaho Sunday March 8 before going on a six game road stretch.
