BOISE, Idaho – The Wildcats showed the importance of playing every moment.
Junior central midfielder Chansi Crompton drilled a 20-yard free kick with 20 seconds remaining to force overtime, and senior forward Mackenzie Harrison converted a 103rd minute penalty as the Weber State University women's soccer team twice rallied to defeat Boise State on Sunday afternoon at the Boas Soccer Complex.
It is the Wildcats first-ever win in Boise, as they improved to 4-3-1 overall and are now 4-1-1 over the last six matches.
“The girls showed a tremendous amount of toughness today,” Weber State coach Tim Crompton said. “Coming off a double overtime game on Friday, and then turning around and doing it again less than 48 hours later. We continue to make improvements with each game we play, and today was no exception.”
After Boise State's Eva Herrera scored off a rebound to put the Broncos ahead 1-0 in the 40th, Weber State answered the bell back five minutes later when redshirt freshman midfielder Celeste Wheelwright scored her first career goal, punching in a knockdown pass from freshman midfielder Sydney Seamons off of Harrison's corner kick.
The Broncos regained the 2-1 lead in the 61st minute on Laura Buck's shot to the left post inside the box.
The Wildcats, who looked dominant in possession for much of the first half, regained their offensive rhythm late, continually creating dangerous situations over the final 20 minutes of regulation, but as the clock counted down, it appeared the needed equalizer wouldn't be forthcoming.
That all changed in the dying minute of the match when the Broncos were whistled for a foul just past the outside edge of the box and on the ensuing free kick, Crompton hit a blistering shot into the upper right 90 to level the match at 2-2.
With both teams starting to feel the wear and tear of 90-plus minutes of action under an 85-degree sun, the overtime periods became a war of attrition, until Harrison drew a foul deep in the box in the 103rd minute, and promptly blasted home the penalty kick to life the Wildcats to the victory.
Weber State will wrap up its non-conference season on Friday, when it hosts Loyola Marymount at 3 p.m. at Wildcat Soccer Field.
