Weber State defeats Portland State 102-73

OGDEN – In front of a cheering crowd of over 3,200 the Wildcats took down Portland State in the highest scoring game of the season for Weber State with a 102-73 score. Weber State also had four Wildcats that scored in double figures.
"What a great atmosphere having such an awesome crowd," head coach Bethann Ord said. "It took us a minute to get going today, once we did go it was tough because even though you're ahead you still need to protect and work on the little things. It was great to have so many people step up and succeed today. Our field goal percentage was terrific."
Senior Regina Okoye was a stand out for the Wildcats with a new career high of 28 points and 10 rebounds for her third double double on the year. Her 10 rebounds pushed her over 500 rebounds in her career.
"It felt really good to play hard and my team was there helping me," Okoye said.
The Wildcats came out firing in the first quarter and jumped to an early 16-8 lead. They continued to push and ended the quarter with a 28-14 score.
The second quarter started with a 7-2 run by the Wildcats. PSU answered with a 7-0 run but it wasn't enough to take a lead and the Wildcats had a 54-30 lead at halftime.
The third quarter was the best quarter for the Vikings. They scored 23 points but Weber State still had a 25 point lead for a 78-53 score going into the final quarter of the game. Weber State pressed on and broke 100 points for the first time this season with one minute left on the game clock. The final score was 102-73.
All nine players that recorded minutes in the game scored. Weber State was led by Okoye with her 28 points. Kailie Quinn had 15 points on the game and Deeshyra Thomas had 14. Freshman Yarden Danan had a new career high of 10 points.
Okoye was the team's top rebounder with her 10 on the night and Thomas was right behind with six.
Okoye and Brittney Dunbar teamed up and each had five steals. Dunbar also had the game high of six assists.
Weber State shot 51.9 percent from the field and 34 percent from the three and 61 percent from the free throw line. Weber State had 19 steals to PSU's 13. The Wildcats also had 21 turnovers to the Vikings 30. Portland State shot 38 percent from the field, 33 percent from the three and 65 percent from the free throw line. Weber State scored 48 points in the paint and 40 points off of turnovers.
"This win is a huge confidence booster," Okoye said. "We still wanted to work on things and get better, even though we were ahead by a lot."
The Wildcats are now 11-4 overall on the season and 3-1 in Big Sky Conference play. The Wildcats will next host Sacramento State Saturday Jan. 16 before hosting Idaho State Jan. 23.
