Weber State falls 58-57 to Idaho State

OGDEN – The Weber State women's basketball team fell 58-57 to Idaho State Saturday afternoon in the annual White Out Skin Cancer game.
"It was very aggressive game," Head Coach Bethann Ord said. "We asked the girls to mix it up this time and they did a really good job executing the game plan. This game hurt but you have to give it to Idaho State, they came in very physical and we needed to push through that and protect our home court."
Idaho State started the game with a 5-0 lead. The lead didn't last long however as the Wildcats went on a 5-0 run to tie it up. The game remained tied or within one point for the rest of the first quarter and ended with Idaho State having an 18-16 lead over the Wildcats.
Weber State went on a 6-0 run late in the second quarter tying the game at 26-26 and then took a four point lead. The largest lead for the Wildcats during the first half. WSU maintained the lead with a big three point and one by Dionne Coe to end the first half 34-30.
The Bengals started the second half on a 15-4 run claiming a 45-38 lead with only 1:56 left in the third quarter. The Wildcats closed the gap a little and ended the third quarter trailing 45-49.
Idaho State didn't back down at all in the fourth quarter. The Wildcats brought the score to 54-52 with three minutes left in the game while the Bengals were on a four minute scoring drought. A made three point shot by Deeshyra Thomas with 1:40 left on the clock gave the Wildcats a 55-54 lead. The last 30 seconds of the game was back and forth score but ISU came out victorious with a 58-57 score.
"We definitely have a lot to work on," Okoye said. "We've played teams before so they know how we play. It was definitely bitter sweet game, we did really good adjusting our defense as we went."
The Wildcats were led by Regina Okoye who had 17 points and six rebounds and three steals. Brittney Dunbar also had six rebounds and scored in double figures with 10 points. Thomas came up big for the Wildcats with 13 points and Kailie Quinn had three made three pointers.
Weber State shot 40 percent from the field, 29 percent from the three and 66 percent from the free throw line. Idaho State shot 59 percent from the field, 42 percent from the three and 62 percent from the free throw line. ISU made 42 points in the paint while WSU only had 24. The Bengals out rebounded the Wildcats 27-21. Weber State forced Idaho State to 22 turnovers.
Weber State is now 4-2 in Big Sky Conference play and 12-5 overall on the season. The Wildcats hit the road to take on Northern Arizona, Thursday Jan. 28 and Southern Utah Saturday, Jan. 30.
