OGDEN – As defending Big Sky Conference champions, the Weber State University softball team isn't backing down from playing anyone.

With the first official practice of the season coming up next week, the Wildcats are excited to formally announce their 2016 schedule.

“We have roughly four weeks to get ready for seven weekends on the road,” Weber State coach Mary Kay Amicone said. “We are excited to compete and continue to challenge ourselves with tough opponents throughout the non-conference and conference seasons.”

Weber State will open up its 2016 slate on Feb. 12 at the Easton Tournament, hosted by Cal State Fullerton, with Canisius set to be the Wildcats' season opener at Noon (11 a.m. PT).

The second weekend will see WSU head to the DeMarini Desert Classic, hosted by UNLV in Henderson, Nev., followed by the Texas Invitational, hosted in Austin, Texas, by the nationally-ranked Longhorns.

“Our preseason schedule is very competitive,” Amicone said. “We open at Cal State Fullerton with ranked opponents (the Titans and San Diego State). We're excited to be back playing at UNLV's tournament, and a first for our program, going to the University of Texas tournament."

Weber State will compete in the Mustang Classic, hosted by Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo, Calif., in week four, followed by the Fresno State Classic in Fresno, Calif., in week five, and the San Diego Classic II, hosted by San Diego State, in Santee, Calif., to wrap up the tournament portion schedule in week six.

“All six preseason tournaments will test our grit and skills.”

The Wildcats will open up defense of their Big Sky Conference title on March 25 in Hillsboro, Ore., against Portland State.

Weber State's first home game of the season will be the start of a three-game Big Sky Conference series with Northern Colorado on April 1. WSU will host two addition three-game Big Sky series after facing the Bears, with Idaho State (April 15-16) and Sacramento State (April 29-30) set to come to Wildcat Softball Field.

The Wildcats will also face Utah (March 29), Utah Valley (April 5), and Utah State (April 20) in in-state, non-conference action.

The Big Sky Conference championship tournament, which was expanded to six teams this season, will take place on May 12-14 at the site of the regular-season champion.

Weber State's first official practice of 2016 is set for Jan. 11.
