After 11 seasons as the head coach of Weber State softball, Mary Kay Amicone retired in May 2024. A former Wildcat player, she has transformed the Wildcat program and led Weber State to 10 Big Sky Championships and is Weber State’s and the Big Sky Conference’s all-time leader in wins.Â
In her long and storied career, coach Amicone has won over 800 games as head coach at Weber State, Salt Lake Community College, and BYU.Â
Amicone is also a former Weber State player and has been the head coach at Weber State since 2014. In her 10 years with the Wildcats, she has led Weber State to 297 wins and is the Big Sky Conference's all-time leader in wins and winning percentage. She has won 117 conference regular season games, the most in Big Sky history.Â
She has guided the Wildcats to six Big Sky regular season titles and four Big Sky Tournament championships. The Wildcats have advanced to the NCAA Championships four times and in 2019, became the first school in Big Sky history to win a game at the NCAA Regionals.Â
She has been named the Big Sky Coach of the Year four times and also coached three Big Sky Conference Players of the Year.Â

Amicone’s 800th win as a collegiate head coach came in the form of a 2-0 win against Montana in March of 2024. She recorded her 700th collegiate career win on May 18, 2019 in WSU’s first ever NCAA regional 7-3 win over CS Fullerton. Her 600th collegiate career win came on April 16, 2016, with a 7-3 win over Idaho State at Wildcat Softball Field.
In Big Sky Conference action, Amicone is the first and only coach in conference history to have reached the 100-win plateau. She notched her 100th career victory with a resounding 10-1 run-ruling of Northern Colorado on April 23, 2022.
The 2022 Wildcats – a team that was undoubtedly the best in Big Sky Conference history – set all kinds of program and conference standards en route to tying a program-record 38 victories. The Wildcats won the Big Sky Conference regular season and tournament titles – the ninth and tenth championships in program history – and became the first team in the Big Sky Conference to be named a three seed in NCAA Regional play.
In 2022, Weber State also set school records for longest winning streak (12), overall winning percentage (.729), conference winning percentage (.929), and the program won its first-ever game against a team from the SEC with its 2-1 win over Texas A&M on March 4, 2022. 11 of Amicone’s players were named to all-conference teams at the end of the season, and Arissa Henderson was named the conference’s Newcomer of the Year and conference tournament MVP, and 11 Wildcats received all-conference honors. As a reward for her team's incredible year and success, Amicone was named Big Sky Conference Coach of the Year for the third year in a row and for fourth time overall in her career.
Her 2021 WSU team, after going 15-3 in Big Sky Conference action, won the regular season conference championship and made some history along the way. Amicone was named Big Sky Conference Coach of the Year for the third time in her career, and her team dominated the Big Sky season awards. 12 Wildcats received all-conference honors, including Lauren Hoe who was named Player of the Year, Mariah Ramirez was named Pitcher of the Year, and Mia Rushton was tabbed as Freshman of the Year. The 2021 Wildcats also had 19 players named to the conference’s All-Academic team.
In her sixth season, Weber State posted a 27-21 overall record, winning its fourth Big Sky Conference regular season and third Big Sky tournament title. The Wildcats made their fifth straight post season appearance by getting the bid to the NCAA regionals. WSU earned the first ever NCAA Regionals victory in conference history. She also had seven players earn All-Big Conference honors.Â
In Amicone’s first season at the helm in 2014, the Wildcats posted a 22-25 record, including a 4-10 mark and fifth-place finish in Big Sky Conference play. The 22 wins eclipsed the modern-era record of 21 set in 2012. Six players earned All-Big Sky Conference honors, and one, senior right-handed/utility player Jasmine Ioane, was named to the National Fastpitch Coaches Association’s All-Midwest Region team.
Before coming to Weber State in 2014, she spent nine seasons as the head coach at Salt Lake Community College where she led the Bruins to seven conference titles and advanced to three National Junior College Championship games. She was named the conference Coach of the Year four times. She won 430 games in her time at SLCC.Â
Amicone was also the first varsity head coach at BYU where she coached from 2000-2002, and led the Cougars to the 2001 Mountain West Championship and was named Coach of the Year. She led the Cougars to 81 wins in three seasons. She also spent seven seasons as an assistant coach at the University of Utah and was the head baseball coach at Jordan High School, the first female to coach at Utah high school boys’ baseball team.Â
She played two seasons at Weber State from 1980-81, then two more seasons at Utah.Â
She is married to Marc Amicone who is the President and General Manager of the Salt Lake Bees. They are the parents of Trevor and Derek, and his wife Claire. They are expecting their first grand baby in June 2024.
