'Cats down Montana State 4-0 in Big Sky tournament

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - For the first time since 2003 the Weber State women's tennis team picked up a first round win in the quarterfinals of the Big Sky Championship tournament by taking down Montanan State 4-0 Friday afternoon.
"The girls wanted to win today and it showed," Director of Brad Ferreira said. "They need to realize that they are good enough to be here and to keep winning. They are finally starting to believe they are as good as I keep telling them they are."
The Wildcats started the match off by claiming the doubles point with wins in the number one and two spots. Sara Parker and Kristi Elmer defeated Laura Middel and Naomi Holopainen 6-4 in the No. 1 spot. The duo of Agata Bachanek and Devi Hasan defeated Jessica Brycki and Wanda Holopainen 7-5 in the No. 2 spot.
The doubles point advantage was exactly what the Wildcats needed going into the singles competition.
Morgan Dickason picked up the first win for Weber State in the No. 6 spot defeating Shelby Cerkovnik 6-1, 6-3.
Elmer was the next Wildcat to pick up a win. She defeated Naomi Holopainene 6-0, 6-2 in the No. 2 spot.
Weber State had a 3-0 lead at that point in the match and were looking for one more match win to claim the overall victory.
After picking up a tie breaker win in the first set, Devi Hasan dominated her second set in the No. 5 spot to claim the fourth point for the Wildcats. Hasan defeated Wanda Holopainen 7-6 (5-0), 6-1.
Weber State is now 10-13 overall on the season and will advance to the semifinal round of the tournament taking on the No. 1 seed Northern Arizona. Earlier this season the Lumberjacks defeated the Wildcats with a 5-2 score in Ogden.
