LOS ANGELES - Weber State's men's tennis team fell 4-0 to the No. 2 UCLA Bruins Friday afternoon in its first ever NCAA Championship tournament appearance.
"Obviously UCLA is very good and in theory they should beat us," Director of Tennis Brad Ferreira said. " We competed well at a couple of spots. Our number three doubles was doing very well. Stefan Cooper was one serve game away from winning his match over a highly ranked player. Hou-En Chen played a very good first set while Todd Fought played a very good second set. It is exciting to see our two returners compete very well."
The match started off with UCLA claiming the doubles point with victories in the No. 1 and No. 2 spots. The Wildcat duo of Hou-En Chen and Landon Barlow were tied 3-3 in their match in the No. 3 spot when the doubles were called.
In singles play, Stefan Cooper started off with a first set victory with a score of 6-3 and was up 5-2 in the second set before the match was retired.
The Bruins picked up wins in the number one, four and five spots giving them the 4-0 victory. Todd Fought lost his first set 6-1 and was tied 5-5 in the second set before the match was retired.
All the Wildcats had valiant efforts but UCLA's consistency pushed them to the victory.
The Wildcats have finished the season with a 14-8 overall record and have officially gone into the record books as the first Weber State team to make an appearance in the NCAA Tournament.
"This was a fantastic season and we will be sad to see our seniors go but I am excited to see the continued success of our program," Ferreira said.
