DAVIS, Calif. - Taylor Hintze knocked down a 35-yard field goal as time expired to give Weber State a wild 38-35 win over UC Davis in the Big Sky opener Saturday night at Aggie Stadium.
The Wildcats led by as many as 22 points and led by 19 points heading into the fourth quarter before UC Davis fought back to tie the game in the final minutes. UC Davis fumbled a Weber State punt and the Wildcats recovered the ball with 16 seconds to play. Two plays later, Hintze knocked down the field goal to seal the win.
The Wildcats got the scoring started with a 13-yard run by Jadrian Clark early in the game, and then converted a two-point conversion to lead 8-0. UC Davis came right back with a touchdown and then hit a field goal to lead 10-8 after the first quarter.
Clark hit Darryl Denby for a 34-yard TD pass in the second and followed that up with a 22-yard touchdown pass to Andrew Vollert to make the lead 22-10. Hintze made a 54-yard field goal at the end of the first half to make it 25-10 at halftime. The 54-yard field goal was his first career made field goal and was the third longest in Weber State history.
WSU started the second half with a three-yard touchdown run by Treshawn Garrett and led 32-10 with 12:34 left in the third quarter. A UC Davis field goal made it 32-13 after three quarters. The Aggies cut the lead to 32-20 before Hintze made a 37-yard field goal to make it 35-20 with 7:19 to play.
UC Davis returned the ensuing kickoff 91-yards for a touchdown and then scored a touchdown and two-point conversion with 1:35 to play to tie the game up. Tre'von Johnson then recovered the Aggie fumbled punt which set up Hintze's winning field goal.
"We found a way to get the win tonight and did a lot of good things," said WSU head coach Jay Hill. "We are happy to pull this one out and did a lot of good things but we also can't keep letting teams back in the game. We have to be more disciplined and stop making some big mistakes. I can't say enough about Taylor. He struggled to start the season but did a great job tonight. We had so many good things on special teams that were really big and I'm really proud of our team for finding a way to pull it out."
Weber State (2-2, 1-0) totaled 463 yards of total offense, compared to 380 by the Aggies. WSU had 251 yards passing and 212 yards rushing.
Individually, Clark finished the day 22-of-38 passing for 251 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions. He also rushed for 45 yards with one TD. He moved into 10th place in career total offense yards in Weber State history.
Nine different Wildcats caught passes, led by Denby with seven catches for 83 yards and one TD. Vollert had three catches for 50 yards and a touchdown and Cameron Livingston had five catches for 43 yards.
Garrett had 24 carries for 111 yards and one touchdown. Tre'von Johnson led the defense with eight tackles, including one sack.
The Wildcats have played three of their first four games on the road. After a bye week next week, WSU will have two straight at home, beginning Oct. 8 against Portland State in the annual Homecoming game at Weber State.
